Whetu Challenge - Week 8

This week for Whetu Challenge we did another Can You Build It? Challenge.

This week I worked with Abby, Imogen and Lucian. They were different people to who I would normally work with and I think that we worked quite well together.

It was no different to last week because the only differences were the groups and the challenge! This time we only had one - to build the tallest tower using Newspaper & Cellotape.

I think that we did really well but we didn't do better than the last time when I  worked with Cullen, Johan & Ben.

Our tower measured 2m 27cm and I think that that was really good.

Something that I will remember for next time is making a bigger base because ours was quite small.

Play, Make, Create - Week 4

This week for Play, Make, Create our book was called Theodore the Unsure by Pip Smith.

For Play, Make, Create I chose to do Create. For create, I had to think of other ways that King Theodore could use his mane for when he shaved it off other than using it for sweaters, beanies, wigs and pants for the Polar Bears, Penguins & Snakes.

I thought that something so simple but so special would be amazing so I chose a Blanket.

To make the Blanket I wanted to think outside of the box because I knew that a piece of fabric wouldn't be a Supernova so I decided to try knitting a blanket. Since we were in school I knew that there wouldn't be any proper knitting needles around so I got some skewers and started knitting. It was a bit tricky at first but then I got the hang of it because I already knew how to knit. After I had finished my blanket I drew a small polar bear and then glued it and the blanket onto a pretty piece of paper.

Kite Day!!!

Last Friday was Kite Day and I had a lot of fun!

For my Kite, I used some bamboo stakes from our Garden and shared them with Olivia because I had quite a few, some maize stack cover, tape, string and some pieces of plastic tied in a knot to make a bow for my tail.

Then at 2pm we flew our kites and took turns doing it in classes. All the kites flew really well especially Moana Iti & Nui's.

My kite took about 2 hours to make because all the taping took a while and then having to wrap up my string around the smallest piece of bamboo I could, which wasn't that big.

I think that my kite turned out quite well but it only flew when somebody threw it up when I ran.

Something that I think that I could change is the way that I attached my string. I purposely let the middle of my kite be loose so that when I was flying it the wind would catch it and make it fly but then we had to put the string on the other side so that I could see the side with no bamboo.

I really had a lot of fun making my kite I am going to fly it in the paddock on a windy day at home.

Play Make Create - Week 2 Term 2

This week for Play Make Create the story was 'Be You' by Peter H. Reynolds.

This week I worked by myself and I chose to do the Make part of it. For this weeks Make I did something that shows what I love and some of my passions. Some of them were Motorbikes, Horses, Autumn & Hockey.

What worked well was Spicy - the pony that I loved to ride. I think that that worked well because I was going to do my new Motorbike but I couldn't draw it right so I chose Spicy. I think that the legs, saddle & bridle because sometimes I won't get them right but today I did.

Something that I would change is the word ADVENTURE because it was really big and I think that I could have fitted one other word in if it wasn't that big but I think that the 3D lettering on it was pretty cool

I think that the most Supernova part was Spicy because I put in quite a lot of work on making her look as amazing as she did in reality.

Numbots & TTRockstars - Term 2, Week 1

 Term 2, Week 1 2021

During Term 1 we have been practising our addition and subtraction knowledge through the online programme called NumBots.  At the start, it was super easy but progressively got more challenging.

I am now on the Carbon Fibre level of NumBots.

I enjoy NumBots because it helps me learn more strategies for my Addition & Subtraction!

What I find challenging is some of the subtraction because sometimes it goes from numbers over 100 and sometimes I get the slightest bit confused, especially in challenges.

This week we have started TTRockstars.  This is an online programme which helps us to learn our timetables. This year since I already had my account I was on Rock Hero and since we started my time has dropped quite a bit. I used to be 0.83 and now I am 0.92.

I think that TTRockstars is really awesome because it helps me remember things like my 12  timetables & some of my other hard ones. It also helps me remember my divided-bys. I also think this because on Studio it shows me how quick I can answer questions!

I am on the end of the top line - Carbon Fibre

Play, Make, Create - Week 1 Term 2

This week for Play, Make, Create our story was Up The Creek and the moral of the story was Teamwork.

I worked with Olivia T and we chose design.  For design, we had to make a way to navigate the creeks so we decided to make a map! The map had the big creek and then the creek went off in all sorts of different directions.

First, we had the long creek and the first time there was a different creek it was a dead end, then the second was the skinny route, the third was the safest but longest creek & then the last one was just the creek but it had lots of rapids and rocks.

We also had a key and compass so that is why I think it is a supernova and also because we used shading for the creek to show how deep or shallow it was in some parts. At the end though we really cut it close because when it was time to start tiding up and had to quickly rush.

I really liked how this turned out and I hope I can make a map like this again!

Thursday Fun Day!

 Whetu Fun Day

Last Thursday we had a Whetu Fun Day as our camp was postponed.  Our teachers planned a fun day for us instead!  We participated in a Whetu Amazing Race, a range of different fun rotations, a BBQ lunch and play on the council playground then we finished the day with an Easter Egg hunt and an ice block.

My favourite part of the Amazing Race was getting to run around Ngatea with my Dad and my team because my team was made up of different people and getting to spend more time with Dad off the farm. The people in my team were Olivia T, Maddi, Bella, Olivia M, Nate, Me & my Dad.

The rotation I enjoyed the most was making the Picasso Bunnys because we used pastels and could create our bunny whatever way we wanted and there were lots of different coloured pastels to give my bunny the look that I wanted it to have.

During the Easter Egg Hunt I found my stick underneath some tree bark at the 3 trees by the Moana playground. I think it was a really good hiding spot because the stick was covered in the bark but there was still some of the orange stick showing.

Play Make Create - Camp

This week for play make create we had a keyword instead of a story being read to us. The keyword was Camp

For this session I worked with Olivia T and Cullen. For Play Make Create we did the Create part of it by creating a Camp scene. After we had finished the scene we still had lots of time so we decided to make characters of ourselves out of paper, fabric and ice-block sticks.

My favourite part was the tent because it was patterned and wasn't just a rectangular piece of cardboard that was folded. I think that it turned out great and that it is a Supernova because we worked hard on it and it wasn't just pieces of cardboard folded to make tents.

Math Mystery!!

Today we did a Math Mystery called Longthorne Primary School Athletics Day Trophy Thief. First I was working with Abby because year 6's were going to work with a year 5. Then once we were onto the last clue we figured out that it wasn't right and that was when we started working with Tayla & Pippa. It took a while to figure out but we found out that it was Mollie!! Mollie was in Yr 3, had a metal bottle, was size 9 & was in the blue team!  It was a bit confusing at the start when we found out that our answer was wrong but then we figured it out.

Play Make Create - Giraffes Can't Dance

This week for Play Make Create our creations were based on the book Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae. First, we watched the video of the story and then we could start planning what we were going to do.

I worked with Olivia T and we made Gerald the Giraffe be at the Jungle Dance dancing on the stage. We used Tissue paper for the stage, black and dark navy magazine strips that we cut and then for the grass we used some green paper cut to create a grass shape.

It took longer than we expected because the magazine strips took up most of our time but we finished in time. It wasn't exactly what we wanted but we did the best we could and I am really happy with how it turned out.                                                  The hardest part was placing the magazine strips because there was lots of glue involved and all of the strips needed to go to the middle.

Here is our creation

The Bruntalo

Today the teachers introduced us to Play, Make & Create. Our inspiration was The Gruffalo and we had 4 options to choose from - Design, Build Make or Create. I chose design so we had to do a Google Drawing, Scratch and other online things. But I chose to draw it because then you can make it with more detail. It took me a while to decide how I was going to draw it but then I had the idea that I could make a calf called the Bruntalo. The Bruntalo's name is Bunty the Bruntalo, he is a rising 2 year old bull and is a Purebred Friesian. Since calves can act differently depending on the weather I wrote what he would act like.
Here are his reactions:

Lightning and Thunder: Wild
Sunny: Nice (depends on the temperature though)
Rain and Wind: Scared
Too Stormy: So scared that I really want someone with me

Term 1 Week 5

Monday was our school Swimming Sports. On the day I competed in 3 races. Freestyle 1 Length, Backstroke 1 Length & Breaststroke 1 Length. I tried hard to get into Hauraki Plains but I didn’t. I still have next year to try even harder.

We had two art sessions this week and the first one we did was finishing off our designs and putting them onto our larger circles for our Landscape art.  In the second session, we spent practising painting with one colour and adding in white and black to create a light Green, Dark Green and a normal Green. What we practised painting on was our mountain shapes and we had to draw a scallop pattern then paint inside the scallop shapes.

In reading this week we have been reading the Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. We have Book Detective tasks to complete every day and so far we have done Summariser & Predictor roles.

Part of our maths programme is NumBots and I think I am pretty good at it because I am leveling up fast and on Steel. Numbots is really fun because they make the learning on it fun by making it Cogs, Nuts & Bolts instead of dots or just only addition and subtraction questions.

Term 1 Week 4

The most fun thing we have done during class time this week is doing our writing. I chose to do a Dear Diary about a 15-year-old girl named Vicki.

We started our art this week and I have chosen to do art with Mrs Kennedy. Our art is going to be a Landscape with Islands or a Mountain with the ocean and beach.

We created our WhetÅ« stars on Thursday and they look awesome! Mum came in to help me cut out and glue the pictures onto the star.

Next week we have our school swimming sports. I am feeling confident, nervous and excited! I feel confident because I know that I can swim more than one length of the pool, nervous because I will be racing against some of my friends & excited because I think that I have a good chance of getting into Hauraki Plains.

Term 1 Week 3 - 2021

This term somebody that I have helped is Sophie when she needed help to create her blog.

The most fun activity that I have done this term has been the Whetu Challenge in week 2 because we played Scattergories and then did an Obstacle course!

The most fun thing that I have done at Lunchtime has been playing Crocodile with Olivia, Tayla, Marley, Scarlett, Shirley & Haven!

One word that I would describe learning in Whetu is AMAZING!

Something I am looking forward to is Swimming Sports!

Whetu Challenge - Week 8

This week for Whetu Challenge we did another Can You Build It? Challenge.  This week I worked with Abby, Imogen and Lucian. They were diff...
